final clue

The obvious answer is staring me in the face, no doubt. But I don't know what this collection of ordinals is meant to index.

Still can't understand

What to do with the decoded message from the gay bar... that list leads to nothing.

If it leads to nothing then you did something wrong decoding it. This is level 7, the number 7 does mean something here. Never assume that characters in a message don't repeat!

Only if you assume it is. This isn't meant to be too easy and obvious!

I see 8)

And what about the level 5 ? I wondered if i made a mistake in my pgm or if the solution is voluntarily mal formed (all lines don't have the same lengths) ...

This is getting rather OT for this topic. :) The line lenghts are all the same.

Spadework

All I can think of to start with is to decode the grey strip into a series of numbers representing levels. What I will do with the resulting information I have no idea, but my problem is that I can't imagine how to use Python to do this. In real life I'd open the image in Photoshop, crop it, look at its colour map, and it would be (tedious but) straightforward.

On the other hand, looking at the Python documentation, the most useful-seeming libraries for image processing seem to be confined to Irix (!), and "imageop" has operations which besides not doing most of the job are poorly documented and have unhelpful error messages.

The way the previous puzzles have worked make me think that, in looking for a solution involving technical mastery of obscure and annoying bits of Python, I'm on the wrong track. But I'd like some reassurance, or perhaps a hint ...

That's true! It might help to remember that when you started the challenge, you read this on the first page:

Sometimes you'll need extra python modules. All can be downloaded for free from the internet.

I wouldn't discourage you from downloading the obvious module here . If it helps, I stared at this one for an entire weekend before doing the obvious thing -- and I'm delighted I took the time to learn how to use its simplest functions. You will be too :!:
