Of course i did write a script but how many tries should i make before reaching this message? the case is that i have a dial-up connection so it may be not 30 minutes but 3 hours =)

the whole way should take about 300 hits... People with dial-ups have about 70% discount in this challenge, so they can start from 51350 and catch with the rest of us at the end.

You could do it entirely by hand -- although it would be tedious.

hit the "Divide by two and keep going."
keep going and hit another page "????.html"
keep going and back again to "Divide by two and keep going."

I think that learning how to program is beyond this forum; there are plenty of places on the web that should be able to help you. For python-specifi help with programming, see Python Beginners Guide and the Python Beginners Help resources

Yes, i did it with php. And there are many other ways, i think.

I have tried writing some code to automate the input of the 'nothing' numbers in the address bar, but it's not working. Could somebody tell me why the numbers stop changing after the first time through the loop ? Should I use a different function to urlopen() ?

You passed the same URL every time, ending with "nothing=". Embed the number in the URL (you were passing the number as the optional "data" argument, and that doesn't make sense here -- although it may not raise an exception either).
