This kind of silence is very dear to Python, and rather unique to it as well. Most languages use noise to express the same thing.
Although there is one language out there which is written entirely with silence....

Does anyone have another hint? I may need more than a little hint since I've gotten nowhere, even when I thought I understood the previous hint.
edit: Never mind. Finally got it. They say "you always find things in the last place you look", but in this puzzle it also happened to be the very first place I looked. After not seeing anything I took weeks before I went back to the start.

Oh. My. God.
I don't know if I love or hate these multi-day puzzles. You know, the ones where you keep trying more and more complex things, until you give up and go to bed, and then, just as you are falling asleep, you think of something you haven't tried before, and it works the first time.
It is more frustrating to know that others didn't waste any time looking in the wrong place.
favilla's hint is good, if you know programming languages (especially esoteric ones). fc's hint looks like gloating, but it's actually a very good hint. However, the best for me was one UncleTimmy made in challenge 24. If I had only taken that hint to heart...
