I'm in the process myself, so the only hints (that might be incorrect!) are the following:

- what is the typical difference between gifs and jpegs (apart from animation?)
- my lucky number seems to be 195

More (possibly confusing) hints, since I still didn't solve it:

>>> type(output)
<type 'list'>
>>> len(output)
960
>>> len(set(output))
11

195 is also lucky for me. I ruled out 9 and 225 after a few moments' thought.
I don't get how you're constructing "output", tzot, though I think I see the significance of 960, and otherwise I'm right with you.

Got it!
"da!" is a dead end. So is tzot's "output".

Think modular, circular.

Ah, got it too, after I had studied the image in a bit more detail and had tried a few other options. I just had to get it straight. :)

My first time at the temporary end. Don't know whether to be happy or sad ;o)

Strange. I got it "straight enough" to get the answer, but I seem to be missing some straightness. Will be interesting to find out where i am going wrong.

Actually I understood the significance of 195 by eye alone (zooming in ;) )

I had to work, then, and later I slept over it, and as soon as I had the time I verified the significance of 480, and finally set it straight :)

Now I have to find out how to subscribe Firefox to the RSS feed of the Announcements forum... any hints?

The straightness you seem to be missing is probably the one mjpieters mentioned...

I still haven't.

I suppose it has something to do with all those purple lines, but I can't figure out what.

Is there any significance to there being 5 shades of "black" and 12 shades of "white"?

Got it! Once I finally saw some order in the distribution of the purple, it was easy.

Thanks for the hints, tzot and thiamintrek.
